If you are referring to the university, it is so named because its campus used to be situated in the town of Wake Forest, North Carolina (where I lived from 2000-2004). (As an addendum, the county was named for Elizabeth Wake, the wife of William Tryon, governor of the Province of North Carolina from 1765-1771.)
