Why does ponyboy feel like an outsider?

Ponyboy is an outsider because he's not like anyone else we meet in the book. He's smart and wants to do something with his life and likes school, which makes him unlike the Greasers. Yet he's poor and hangs out with delinquents and has no parents, which is unlike the Socs.
